Assessors field questions from their boards, business owners, and the public on a daily basis. However, the job of the assessor is often misunderstood. Assessors do NOT set or levy taxes: only the governing boards of local municipalities do that. Among many tasks, assessors value property to ensure that everyone contributes their fair share for municipal services.
NYSAA has compiled some resources for assessors to use that explain the job of the assessor and how property values are determined. Please see below.
Please feel free to use these resources as presentations for your boards and the general public.
Former Clay County (Missouri) Assessor Cathy Rinehart and former Clay County Collector of Revenue Lydia McEvoy created a short, fantastic video that explains what an assessor is, how property values are determined, and how assessors keep the process fair and equitable.
