The Institute of Assessing Officers, which is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, is the professional and educational arm of the NYSAA. Membership and the right to use the IAO designation are gained by satisfying certain experience requirements and by the successful completion of an examination covering all aspects of appraisal and assessment administration. An assessor with "IAO" after his or her name is recognized as one who has achieved the highest level of professional competence.
Be sure to review the Instructions for Candidates (below) and the Membership sections of the IAO Constitution and Bylaws to determine if you are eligible to take the exam. After review by the IAO Exam Committee, applicants will be notified if they are eligible to sit for the exam.
The next IAO exam is scheduled for February 11, 2025 at the Town of Greenburgh office, 177 Hillside Ave, Greenburgh, NY 10607. Applications must be submitted to the Exam Committee no later than 30 days in advance of the exam. A $50 exam fee for first-time test-takers and those retaking the test more than three years after their first exam is required.
