One-day seminars provide required and continuing education opportunities for assessors and appraisers. They are produced by the Institute of Assessing Officers, the professional instruction arm of the NYS Assessors Association.
Reminder: New York State will not reimburse or give credits for any class taken twice within a three-year period.
As of July 1, 2021, all online class attendees are required to have a camera and microphone, and the camera must be on at all times during instruction.
All one-day seminars are held online via Zoom, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., unless otherwise indicated. The link is sent to all registrants the day before the class is held. CORRECTION OF ERRORS, PRO-RATAs, & OMITS, OH MY!

The course will be right in time for tax bills going out and assisting newer assessors with how to resolve errors. This course is intended to guide assessors through the various laws and procedures to correct assessment rolls and tax rolls. Depending on what stage of the assessment cycle assessors are in when the error is discovered, there are different forms, procedures, and notifications that need to be followed to make the corrections. There will be a question and answer period at the end of the class.
Not approved for DOS credit.
ETHICS AND THE ASSESSOR - This class will be offered several times during 2025.

Ethics and the Assessor is being offered to help local assessing officials understand the ethical dilemmas they may encounter during the normal course of their workday. Participants will learn about the laws that address ethics, including conflicts of interest of municipal officers and employees, RPTL Sec. 336, statement of disclosure for assessors, freedom of information laws, and open meeting laws. There will be real life question and answer sessions that will be explored through group discussions. An ethics course is required for all assessors and county directors who were elected, appointed, or reappointed within the last year.
LITIGATION SKILLS FOR THE ASSESSOR

This seminar is a dive into the world of litigation with special emphasis on the assessor as a witness, along with desired qualities in appraisers hired as expert witnesses. The class will start with the court process and terminology, followed by who is able to be an expert witness in court and the limitations of their testimony. From there, the class will get into some techniques attorneys use (and are trained to use) to discredit experts and steps assessors can take to become more credible witnesses. By the end of the day, attendees should have a much better understanding of this complex and sometimes intimidating process. This is a great seminar for all levels of assessment professionals.

Master the calculator’s ability to handle various scenarios, including applicants with or without income tax returns; computing unreimbursed medical expenses total; separating incomes due to divorce, separation, or death; and combining incomes for newly married seniors. Bring your unique income processing challenges for discussion. Excel beginners welcome.
